Niche Analysis and Its Value in Keyword Research
Keyword research should never begin and end with a single niche. Many people think they know exactly where to market their website or products and they only search within a very narrow field. It is important to widen your perspective appropriately to ensure you miss nothing in the process.
Choosing a Search Radius
Start by creating a list of your niche and all of the related topics you can think of. It is low tech and simple, but sometimes the most effective way to start your research is by using what you already know. With that list in hand, it is time to start supplementing with some focused research. Here are five steps to help you do so:
- Search on Google for your niche and all of the related topics you chose. Write down any other niches or topics that appear multiple times throughout your searches.
- Use a keyword research tool for each of the topics you have now written down (assume you will have as many as 25).
- Choose 10 niches in addition to the main category of your website or product that have substantially successful keywords.
- Cross reference all of the keywords you have found – are there any that show up for multiple niches?
Once you have d
one some research on your niche and analyze who visits and why they visit (by learning which keywords they use) you can start deciding whether another niche can be a useful resource for gathering traffic to your website.
Cross Promotion with Keywords
Say for instance that you are trying to sell flowers and flower arrangements. If you only researched keywords in the flower arrangement niche – ones like “flower delivery”, “flower gifts”, or “flower bouquets” – you might miss out on opportunities to gather traffic. There are dozens of different holidays and events on which you might market your flowers – Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Birthdays, Anniversaries. If you don’t look into these niches and see if there are any keywords that match your products and services, you may miss out on solid opportunities.
Use the list of categories and topics you have generated to continue your keyword research. Don’t use anything that will be unrelated to your niche though. Using “mother’s day trinkets” for example is not a good choice if you only sell flowers, but “mother’s day gift ideas” may be a good one as flowers are a great gift idea.
The goal here is to make sure you have as many options at your disposal before you start looking at volume and competition. If you can look outside the box for ideas, you can be sure to get as many viable keywords and phrases as possible.
