Why Keyword Research Is So Damn Hard?

By Jon | January 12, 2009

Rubic’s Cube

I have a subscriber who sent me a message and asking why keyword research is so damn hard. I know the ordeal she’s facing as I was on her situation nearly 3 years ago.

But I tell you it isn’t hard. People just make it so difficult.

If you’re one of the people who find it difficult, these could be the reasons:

You don’t have a clear goals and objectives.

People do keyword research for various reasons. This can be for PPC campaign, article marketing, or niche research. Your goal and objective depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.

If you’re doing PPC campaign, then you are looking for those keywords that are converting or what commonly known as “buying keywords.” I’ll discuss this type of keywords in my future post.

If you’re into article marketing, then you’re after long-tail keywords with little to competition.

If you’re into Google Adsense (advertising) business model, you’re looking into high to medium traffic keywords with high advertiser bids.

CLEARLY define your objectives, and then create a specific and measurable goal. Your goal can be number of keywords you will attack through article marketing.

You’re confused which keyword research tool to use.

There are tons of keyword research tool out there and wherever you go, people seems to advice (promote?) different tools.

Are you aware of affiliate marketing? Affiliates are basically commissioned sales people. They get a certain percentage from every sale they make. With this, people are writing blog posts, forum posting, etc., to promote a keyword research tool.

This is a BIG reason why people promote different tools. To make money.
My advice is just use Google Keyword Tool because they hold the largest search data and it’s free to use. For basic keyword research, you really don’t need fancy reports.

You didn’t gather your keywords in a single place.

If you’re like most people, you don’t have a single file or spread sheet that will list all the keywords you’ve searched. A spread sheet that will help you to analyze which keyword is the best to use.

In my book “Digging For Gold”, I included a FREE spread sheet where you can type in all important details of a keywords like, number searches, number of competition, etc. This will help you to have a single view for keyword analysis.

You don’t know what you’re doing.

This sums up all the points given above. You may be just gone straight to keyword research tool website and start punching in words and phrases. I suggest that you spend 10-15 minutes and be specific with your objectives and goals.

Gather all those keywords and analyze manually which is best for your search engine marketing campaign.

Follow my advice and you’ll be relieved!

    Hi,

I was reading your WSO and decided to order this from the Warrior Forum. Then it came up as $17. I saw your URL before it went to PayPal that’s why I was able to locate you here. Is this e-book still available as a WSO for $7?

    Thanks

    Hi Jon,

I have to be honest that I initially thought that such Jon Orana isn’t really existing, and is only a robot or an “online figure” created by an online firm.

Anyways, for this post of yours, I’ll try my very best to do it on my blog. I hope your advices really do work.

Thanks and more power to you!

Hahaha. I can’t blame you. Lots of people in Internet faking things. Maybe they’re hiding something or what. :)

But yes, I am a human being and that’s really my name.

    Thank you for visiting.

Clear and concise as usual. Keyword research has become a whole lot easier since I subscribed to your list Jon, so thank you. It’s a very confusing area for many people and it really doesn’t need to be if it’s approached systematically.

Nice to see someone recommending the free Google tool rather than trying to sell the latest must have $$$ tool. Your Digging for Gold is a great resource too. Of course the best keyword research tool of all is – the human brain. :)

P.S You might want to remove the second is from your post headline ;)

Hi Max. Thanks for dropping by and I’d realized the unnecessary “is” from the title.

Thanks again and glad you like Digging for Gold.
