Some people don’t want or need to reach a worldwide audience with their keywords and seek ways to optimize for local searches. There is a misconception about how local searching works though and how much you should spread out beyond the keywords that directly relate to your city or town.

If you use traditional means to research local keywords, you will often find that they all have low search volume and competition. Exceptions will occur for certain locations – if you live in a big city or are working within a metro area, you will find that the competition can often be quite high. Five Criterias of Web Directories That May Hurt Your Page Rank

There has been hundreds of questionable SEO companies and freelancers offering website submissions from hundreds to thousands of web directories in a measly couple a bucks.Not to mention lots of people are creating senseless web directories on either to flip the site or monetize it through PPC programs like Google Adsense.

If you are thinking that having links to these directories will increase your page rank, think again.

The truth is, this may hurt you even more. Why? Because Google in particular, does not brings you Google juice from just any directory that you know out there.

In a blog comments from Matt Cutts of Google, he mentioned that you should check the quality of directories you intend to submit your website. Not every directory, if not most of them, is worth to submit your site to.

Guide on Buying Keyword Rich Domain

The issue of using keyword rich domain for great advantage on search engine optimization is really debatable.go-daddy.gifFor those who says it has a merit, simply because using keywords on domain with relevant content will give search engines an idea of the true theme of your site. I agree.

On the other hand, with thousands of domain squatters out there, it is nearly impossible for new websites to acquire keyword rich domain. How can they then possibly compete if domain is such a big factor.

Should you buy an expensive keyword rich domain or a verylongkeywordrichdomain.com for search engine optimization purposes? I will recommend no.

The money to spend on buying expensive domain should be pour in instead on creating unique and valuable content for your website or for advertising.

Using very long domain that it is hard to remember does not make sense either. You are missing the point of Internet Marketing campaing if you fall in any of the two.

Google for example is considering more than 200 factors for ranking a certain website. Even if a keyword rich domain will give a website a point, it will be very small fraction of the total. With the risk in the near future that search engines will not credit a domain completely.

Go ahead and search for few terms in Google and compare the domain names of the top 10 results. You should see variety of results that will tell you the value a keyword in a domain.

If you will Google the term “domain registration”, you should see only 2 out of top 10 results has the phrase “domain registration” on its domain. Go ahead and try to search for couple of other terms.

In conclusion, you are better off to save you money for more valuable things. The focus, effort and resources should be spend in developing a website that is really useful for your visitors and for the Internet community in general.

Free Keywords Research Tool Using Yahoo Website

With countless free and paid tools on keywords research out there, I would say the best tools to give you accurate information is from the source itself and it is FREE. Here’s one.

Today, I will share to you a simple keyword research technique using Yahoo! website that many researchers have overlooked.

Yahoo! improved their website user interface to better server searches by introducing a new feature called “Search Assist.”

This feature tries to anticipate what the user is about to search by giving them lists of possible words or phrases that a user about to type.

Let’s have an example. Say you have a website or plan to build a site about “dogs”. Go to their main website at http://www.yahoo.com.

You should see at the very top of the a search box similar to the image below.

Now, start to slowly type in the word “dog”. Immediately yahoo will list down text related words that are searched frequently. As you finished typing a word, you will see more related terms.

If you type a space after the word “dog”, another set of phrases or words will be presented to you. Go ahead and play around with. Start gathering these words and put it on your master list.

You can also find this tool useful if you’re searching for a niche keywords.

Let’s have another example. If your site is about “dog training”, type the term slowly in the search box and you should see keywords and phrases. Don’t forget to scroll down by clicking the arrow down to see more keywords.

Google has its own version of this tool but not through their website. You have to install and use google toolbar. I’ll tackle that on my next post.
